How to Reduce Noise in Bird Photos: Three Methods Tested

Bird photography often means working with less-than-ideal light and demanding camera settings. You may need a fast shutter speed to freeze a bird in motion, a long telephoto lens to reach a distant subject and a high ISO when shooting at dawn, on cloudy days or under the cover of trees.

The result can be a sharp shot that looks fine at a glance but reveals distracting luminance noise and colour speckles as soon as you zoom in. Noise becomes even more noticeable when you crop heavily to make a distant bird fill the frame.

In this guide, we'll look at three practical ways to remove noise in bird photos: Aiarty Image Enhancer, Adobe Lightroom, and Topaz Photo. We'll walk through how each approach works and compare the results on the same bird photos. 

Which Noise Reduction Method Should You Try?

Method 1: Remove Noise from Bird Photos with Aiarty Image Enhancer

 Aiarty Image Enhancer may not be as familiar to some photographers as Lightroom or Topaz Photo. It is an AI-powered image enhancement tool that includes AI denoising along with upscaling and other image enhancement features.

One thing that makes it worth considering for bird photography is the balance between automatic enhancement and manual control. You can let the AI handle the denoising, but you can also drag the strength slider (ranging from 0-1) to control how strongly the AI enhancement is applied to the image. A higher value helps prioritise sharpness and detail, while a lower value gives you a more natural and subtle enhancement.

 I tried it on several bird photos and found the workflow straightforward. In many cases, I could get a good starting result without spending much time adjusting settings. When the default result wasn't quite what I wanted, however, I could fine-tune the Strength, Max Tile Size, or try a different AI model rather than simply accepting the automatic result.

 This combination can be useful for bird photographers who want a relatively simple workflow but still want some control when a particular photo needs more or less aggressive processing. A free trial is also available if you want to test it yourself.

 Once Aiarty Image Enhancer is installed, reducing noise is a fairly simple process.

 1. Import Your Bird Photo

Start by importing the photo you want to process.

Aiarty supports both JPG and RAW files, so you can work with a processed image or go back to the original camera file when available.

It also supports importing multiple photos at once, which is useful if you have a batch of bird photos that need similar treatment.

2. Choose an AI Model

Next, choose an AI model for the image.

In my tests, I usually started with Real-Photo v3 or More-Detail GAN v3.

However, there isn't one model that will produce the best result for every bird photo. Different images can respond differently depending on the level of noise, the amount of detail, and the original image quality.

3. Choose the Upscaling Setting

Under Upscale, select the output scale you need.

If you only want to reduce noise without changing the image dimensions, choose x1. This keeps the original output dimensions while applying the enhancement.

If you've heavily cropped a distant bird and also want to make the image larger, you can choose a higher upscale factor instead. This can be useful when the final image needs to be printed or displayed at a larger size.

4. Process the Image and Preview the Result

Once your settings are ready, start the AI processing.

Processing time will vary depending on your computer and the image, so you'll need to wait for the result.

Once processing is complete, you can preview the enhanced image and check whether the noise has been reduced without making the feathers look overly smooth.

If you're happy with the result, you can move on to exporting. If not, try a different AI model, or adjust the Strength or Max Tile Size setting.

For images that need additional colour correction, you can also expand the Color section and make adjustments there.

5. Export the Enhanced Photo

When you're satisfied with the result, export the image.

For a single photo, choose Single Export.

If you want to apply the same settings to multiple photos and process them together, choose Batch Export. This can save time when you're working through a series of bird photos taken under similar conditions.

How Does Aiarty Compare with Lightroom and Topaz Photo?

That's only one side of the story. The more interesting question is how the results compare with other popular approaches.

I'll put the original bird photos alongside the results from Aiarty Image Enhancer, Lightroom, and Topaz Photo and compare how each handles noise, fine feather detail, and overall image quality.

Method 2: Reduce Noise from Bird Photos with Lightroom

For photographers who already use Lightroom to organize and edit their bird photos, Lightroom is a straightforward place to start. You can import, cull, adjust, denoise, and export your photos without moving between different applications.

Lightroom's AI-powered Denoise is especially useful for noisy RAW files. For JPEGs, you'll need to use the traditional manual noise reduction controls instead. Here's how the workflow works.

1. Import Your Photo

Open Lightroom and click Import to select your bird photo.

If you're using Lightroom Classic, switch to the Develop module. In the cloud-based Lightroom desktop app, open the Edit panel instead.

2. Zoom In and Check the Feather Detail

Before applying noise reduction, it's worth taking a close look at the image so you know what you're trying to fix.

Click on the bird's head or feather area to zoom in, or press Z to view the image at 100%.

Pay attention to two things in particular: how much noise is visible in the darker areas and background, and whether the fine feather patterns are still clearly defined. This gives you a useful reference for judging the result later.

3. Apply AI Denoise

For RAW photos, Lightroom's AI-powered Denoise is the option I'd recommend trying first.

In the right-hand panel, scroll down to Detail and click Denoise Lightroom will open a preview where you can adjust the Amount slider.

I wouldn't automatically push the Amount as high as possible. With bird photos, excessive noise reduction can make fine feathers look overly smooth or lose some of their natural texture. Start with a moderate setting and check the bird at 100% before applying it.

Once you're happy with the setting, click Enhance. Lightroom will process the image and create a new DNG file with the AI Denoise applied.

For JPEG photos, Lightroom's AI Denoise workflow is not available in the same way. Instead, use the manual noise reduction controls in the Detail panel. You can adjust Luminance and Color noise reduction separately to find a balance between a cleaner image and preserved detail.

4. Export the Denoised Photo

Once you've finished your other edits and are happy with the result, export the processed photo in the format and resolution you need.

Using Lightroom with an External Enhancer

Method 3: Reduce Noise from Bird Photos with Topaz Photo

Topaz Photo is another option for photographers who want to clean up noisy bird photos with an AI-based workflow. It may be particularly appealing if you're already familiar with Topaz's photo tools or want more control over where and how noise reduction is applied.

What I found useful for bird photos is that the Denoise tool doesn't have to treat the entire image in exactly the same way. You can target the subject or background separately, which can be helpful when, for example, the bird has fine feather detail that you want to preserve while the background is noticeably noisy.

The actual workflow is fairly straightforward, although there are more settings to experiment with than you might need for a simple noise-reduction job. If you're willing to spend some time comparing models and adjusting the strength, Topaz gives you quite a bit of control over the final result.

How to Denoise a Bird Photo with Topaz Photo

1. Import your photo

Drag your bird photo into Topaz Photo. The application will automatically analyse the image, after which you can adjust the enhancement settings yourself.

2. Choose the Appropriate Denoise Workflow

For a RAW photo, Topaz Photo uses its dedicated RAW Denoise workflow. When the original RAW file is imported directly, Topaz can apply its RAW-specific processing, with RAW Normal and RAW Strong options.

For JPG and other non-RAW images, use the regular Denoise filter. It offers Normal, Strong, Extreme, and Denoise MAX models.

You can adjust Strength and Original Detail. I recommend starting with a moderate setting rather than immediately using the strongest option. The more aggressively you process the image, the more important it becomes to check whether fine feather patterns still look natural.

3. Preview the result

Preview the processed image and compare it with the original.

For bird photos, don't just look at whether the background appears cleaner. Zoom in on the feathers, eye, and beak as well. If the image looks cleaner but the feather texture has become too smooth, try reducing the Strength or switching to a different Denoise model.

4. Export the image

Once you're happy with the result, click Export Image in the upper-right corner to save the processed photo.

Bird Photo Noise Reduction Comparison: Aiarty vs. Lightroom vs. Topaz Photo

To see how these three approaches compare in practice, I processed the same bird photos with Aiarty Image Enhancer, Lightroom, and Topaz Photo. I then compared the results at 100% magnification, paying particular attention to visible noise, feather detail, and the bird's fine features.

Test 1: Noise Reduction in a RAW Bird Photo

For the first test, I used a RAW photo from a Nikon D5200. The image was shot at ISO 800, so the noise isn't particularly severe, making this a useful test of how much detail each tool can preserve while cleaning up relatively moderate noise.

What I noticed

All three tools reduced the visible noise while retaining a good amount of the bird's fine feather detail. There were also some differences in overall colour and tone between the three results. In this particular comparison, Aiarty showed less visible colour and tonal shift relative to the reference image, while Lightroom and Topaz produced somewhat different renderings.

Since these differences can come from how each application processes and renders the RAW file, I wouldn't attribute them to the denoising algorithm alone. If maintaining the look of the source image is important, it's worth checking both noise reduction and overall rendering when comparing results.

Test 2: Noise Reduction in a JPG Bird Photo

Original photo information: Canon EOS 200D II · ISO 500 · f/2.8 · 1/400 sec.

Because Lightroom's AI Denoise is designed for supported RAW and does not provide the same AI Denoise workflow for JPEGs, I compared the JPEG using Aiarty Image Enhancer and Topaz Photo instead.

What I noticed

Aiarty cleaned up the noise more thoroughly in this particular image, including some of the noise visible in the background. Topaz reduced the overall noise as well, but some background noise was still noticeable.

Final Words

These tests aren't meant to declare an overall winner. Noise reduction is highly dependent on the source image, and a result that works well for one bird photo may not work as well for another. ISO, lighting, file format, exposure, and the amount of detail captured can all affect the final result.

That's why, for images that really matter, I wouldn't rely on a single noise reduction tool or preset. Comparing a few different results can help you find the one that offers the right balance of noise reduction, preserved feather detail, and a natural-looking result.
