Top Tips for Wildlife Photography at Dawn
There is something magical about the quiet times just before dawn — the world only half awake, the air sharp, and animals stirring. Taking wildlife photos in such conditions is highly rewarding and equally challenging. Animals are most active at dawn, and light shifts every minute. Every decision, from camera settings to position, affects how the story unfolds in your frame.
Coping with the Cold
When I went to Sweden, the cold broke my tripod. When I went to Canada, the cold broke my lens. When I went to Antarctica, the cold broke my camera. I could go on…!

What Style of Photographer are you?
Every now and then, people tell me they recognise my photographic ‘style’, but I’m never sure what that means. I guess I just do what comes naturally, so it seems strange to think of myself as having a particular ‘style’, but I guess I do.
What I Have in my Camera Bag
I’ve taken pictures in 26 countries on all seven continents, but the only place I’ve visited regularly is Africa.
This list of what’s in my camera bag is therefore geared towards a safari trip, and it would obviously look a bit different if I was snorkelling in the Galápagos Islands or going white water rafting!
