Capture the Moment!
Since 2013, I’ve published hundreds of blog posts on all aspects of photography. Some are aimed at helping photographers with their technique, settings, and equipment, but others describe my exhibitions, workshops, and adventures in Africa, Antarctica and beyond.
Feel free to browse chronologically or click on the heading above any post for specific categories, such as Equipment, Trips or Hints and Tips.

How to Edit Your Photos When Travelling Abroad
Travelling overseas gives you the opportunity to capture moments you simply cannot recreate at home. You might photograph sunrise markets in Bangkok or late-night city streets in Tokyo.
Travel Photography Mistakes to Avoid When Exploring Remote Areas
Every great travel photo begins before the shutter clicks. It starts in the way you read a place, in the patience you carry into unfamiliar streets, and in the small decisions that most photographers rush right past.
Photographing Wildlife in the UAE: A Practical Road Trip Guide for Nature Photographers
Plan a UAE wildlife photo road trip with tips on timing, locations, camera gear, car rental and protecting equipment from heat and sand.
Where to go on Safari: Africa or India?
As a wildlife photographer, I’m often asked which I prefer, Africa or India—but that’s a bit like asking if you prefer a shot of Italian espresso or a glass of vintage Bordeaux. Both can be world-class, but there’s a time and a place for each one—and the experience on the palate (or through the viewfinder!) couldn’t be more different.
My Favourite Places: Muchenje
Botswana has more elephants than anywhere else in the world, and Chobe National Park has more elephants than anywhere in Botswana, so if you like elephants, there’s only one place to go! I’ve been four times now, and my last three trips have been to Muchenje Safari Lodge, which is one of my favourite places for wildlife photography.
My Favourite Places: Kicheche
Anywhere you see five cheetah kills in a week is going to be a great place for wildlife photography! And that’s what happened to me when I first visited Kicheche Bush Camp in 2018 with Paul Goldstein. Paul is one of the owners of Kicheche Camps in Kenya. There are three camps in the Masai Mara and one in the shadow of Mount Kenya.
On the Edge: Photo Stories from Adventures
Behind every breathtaking photograph taken at the limits of possibility lies a story that ordinary tourists would never experience. These images are created where the well-worn paths end and the true spirit of discovery begins, where the photographer becomes an integral part of the untamed environment. In this article, we share visual narratives from masters who deliberately choose challenging routes and harsh conditions to capture their work.
Photographing Alaska’s coastal wildlife: A cruise through the lens
If you’re a serious nature photographer looking for some unique coastal wildlife photo opportunities, consider going on a dedicated Alaska photo cruise. Unlike other cruises that cater for casual travellers, a special photo-centred workshop will provide a much better chance to capture the shots you’ve always dreamed of.
Where in the World
Since I became a photographer, I’ve been on 35 trips to every continent. It’s taken a long time and cost a lot of money, so if you want to see a particular species, you might appreciate a little help!
Photographic Trips
I’ve been a professional wildlife photographer since 2013, so I often lose track of all my photographic trips! For my own reference and for yours, here’s a list of everywhere I’ve been with my favourite photos from each place.
What's in my Camera Bag?
What equipment do you need to be a professional wildlife photographer? Well, I pack light, so all my camera gear fits in a Tenba Hybrid Roller 21—apart from my 400mm lens, which I carry in a separate dry bag. If I’m visiting a lodge in Africa, there’s usually a free laundry service, so I pack a change of clothes in my jacket to avoid checking any luggage. And that’s it…!
My Wildlife Photography Bucket List
Most of us don’t have the time or the budget to go on many wildlife photography trips, so it’s worth making the most of what we have by going to the right place at the right time. In 2014, I wrote down all the destinations on my photographic bucket list. Here’s an updated version that only includes the best places for wildlife photography that I’ve never visited...
Wet and Wild!
I’ve just come back from a couple of weeks at Kicheche in the Masai Mara. There was so much rain that it sometimes felt like I was in a remake of Waterworld, starring Paul Goldstein!
2024: My New Year's Resolutions
I don’t normally make New Year’s resolutions, but I thought I should share some of the things I’d like to be able to do in 2024. Unfortunately, most of them are outside my control and rely on various businesses getting their act together, but here’s hoping…!
2023: From Grendel to Pumas
This is my last post of 2023, so I thought I'd write a quick review of the year.
Clash of the Continents
I’ve taken pictures in 36 countries on all seven continents, so I thought I should talk about the best one to visit for wildlife photography. Is it North America for grizzlies and polar bears, South America for jaguars and pumas, Antarctica for penguins and seals, Europe for bears and birds, Asia for tigers, Oceania for kangaroos and duck-billed platypuses or Africa for predators and prey?!
Dress for Success!
Wherever you go in the world to take pictures, it’s important to wear the right clothing. I’ve worked as a photographer in 26 countries on all seven continents, so I thought I’d give you the lowdown on what I usually wear in different places and in different conditions.
Find a Travel Company you Like and Stick with it!
Professionals like Andy Skillen are funded by the BBC and other clients to go on photographic trips around the world. The rest of us have to make do with booking our own—often at great expense! So what’s the solution?
10 Best Places in the World for Wildlife Photography
I’ve been a wildlife photographer for 10 years now, and I’ve been on over 30 trips. I’ve set foot on all seven continents, but most of my expeditions have been to Africa. If you want to learn from my experience, here are my top 10 locations for wildlife photography. There are a few good places I haven’t been to, such as South Africa, but these are my favourites.
How to Pack Light!
In March 2021, I wrote a post on my packing list to let people know what I took with me on my photography trips, and you can see an updated version of the list below. However, I thought it was worth revisiting the topic to try to help people pack light.
